Lets start by talking about what this article is not. Its not a comprehensive look at anabolic steroids, the science behind them and their history. If you want a research paper you may need to look elsewhere. What this article is though, is a straight forward and simple guide to using anabolic steroids for the first time and as a result all the fluff has been removed so that you are provided an easy to follow, safe and effective steroid cycle to take.
Why I Wrote It
It is the most common question asked around anabolic steroids and a big part of that is the total excess amount of information and opinions on the subject that does little more then confuses the beginner. I wanted to create a resource for beginners, which meets the 3 main criteria I think are important for them:
This article also has an air or realism in it. I won’t preach (much) about the right way to do things, because I assume most people have already made their mind up about using steroids whether they have the correct preparation or not. In that case I still want them to be safe and get results.
There are a few points I want to focus on before we get to the good stuff.
1. It takes a bigger person to stop
If you are having issues during your cycle, or something feels off you can stop your cycle at any time and commence your PCT (post cycle therapy). Pushing though the pain barrier is usually a good thing, but anabolic steroids are powerful and not to be taken lightly. You can continue research ask on the forums for advice and start a new cycle at a later time, but you can do irreversible damage is your stupid about these things.
2. Tell Your Doctor
You don’t have to make an appointment to see them, but if you have a medical condition come up, they NEED to know your full medical picture. Some of them will begin preaching to you, but there job is to treat you and they have sworn oath to keep all medical information secret.
3. Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)
I love the KISS principle and it applies doubly for your first cycle. You don’t need to win Mr Olympia after one cycle and you don’t need to add exotic compounds to get great results. Your first cycle is as much a learning experience as anything else.
Diet & Exercise
Now diet and exercise fills literally millions of web pages on the internet so I am not going to go in depth here. You will hear people say you should be reaching your natural limit or be an experienced lifter with up to 10 years of continual lifting. This is unrealistic and probably overkill, for most of the people reading this, they wouldn’t need steroids at all if they had 10 years of continual lifting.
However I recommend strongly that you have your diet and exercise to a point where it is habitual. You want to be eating a good ratio of protein/carbs/fat and exercising regularly without having to think too much about it. You will want to be focusing on your cycle and not be thinking about this stuff, so I like to see people with at least 3 months of continual and high quality diet and exercise before they cycle.
Having said that if you don’t eat enough calories or stress your muscles enough with quality training then anabolic steroids won’t help you either.
Well its usually best to start with a goal. In this case I am going to assume it is to put on muscle and improve strength. If you want to burn fat then avoid steroids and take a good hard look at your diet. Even compounds traditionally associated with fat burning work far more effectively when you have a good amount of muscle burning calories with it.
I have spoken about a beginners cycle before here and I haven’t really changed my mind since. Its simple to follow, effective, very safe and a good foundation for future more complicated cycles.
- Weeks 1-10 – 500mg/week Testosterone Enanthate
- Weeks 1-12 – 0.25mg Arimidex EOD
- Weeks 13-14 – Nolvadex 20mg/twice daily
- Weeks 15-16 – Nolvadex 20mg/day
If you want to know why I chose this cycle then read my previous article on it that goes into much greater depth here. There are another 2 compounds I would sometimes recommend with your first cycle but are not necessary.
Dbol is an oral steroid known for extremely good gains. It helpful as a kickstart for your cycle as the steroid half-life is only 4-6 hours so it works quickly whilst you wait for the test e to build in your system (which takes up to 2 weeks). However it may give you extra side effects and can be toxic on the liver so you should only use for 4 weeks. Please use a liver supplement with it such as Liv-52 and don’t drink at all on cycle but especially not whilst using orals.
- Weeks 1-4 – 25mg every day
HCG is commonly used post cycle. Its actually a pregnancy hormone, but it has the effect of protecting your testicles from shrinkage and permeant damage. I could probably add it to the beginner cycle but I want to avoid over-complication and generally there is very little chance of testicular damage on your first moderate cycle. Having said that it doesn’t hurt to take HCG so if you have enough funds and can source it then I would grab some.
- Weeks 1-12 – 250iu twice a week
Now you know what to get, the inevitable question is where do I get it. Well I recommend Gear Oz for an Australian supplier, I have formed a really good relationship with these guys and they sell great quality gear that you are guaranteed to receive. Another one I commonly recommend on my site is Napsgear who have the best prices and range available anywhere. However they are based overseas so there is a 30-40% chance your order will be intercepted by customs. Having said that there are options coming and going on a weekly basis and I keep these updated in my forum at all time.
What Else You will Need
You will need some more equipment before you are ready to start your cycle. You can pick up what you need at a health clinic, needle exchange, ebay or online medical store. For brevity I will list exactly what you will need for this cycle here and links to one place you can get them. However they sell in bulk so feel free to look around for something similar:
Alcohol Wipes (here)
Need to wipe the injection site and vial to avoid contamination.
To hold the oil, 3mL is a good size.
19-21 Gauge 40mm/1.5in Needles (here)
To withdraw the gear, the Gauge (which refers to the size of the hole in the needle) is far to big for injections.
23-25 Gauge 40mm/1.5in Needles (here)
To inject the gear, the smaller hole makes a more pleasurable experience and avoids taking chunks of skin.
Insulin Pins (here)
For the arimidex, you need an insulin pin to measure the IU (international units). Do not use to inject steroids though.
Probably the scariest part for a beginner is the injections. Unless you have medical experience sticking a 3-4cm long needle in your own body is a pretty frightening prospect. Well what can I say other then it gets so much easier with practice and experience. That first injection will be the hardest one you have to do.
There are a number of injection sites on the body, which I have discussed previously here. For a beginner doing 2 injections a week you don’t have to be an expert just yet and can stick with the glute (your arse) for this cycle. Simply draw a line on one of your cheeks right down the middle horizontally and vertically and you want to inject on the top outside quadrant (see image). Anything lower may hit your sciatic nerve (green line) which is not much fun at all.
If you are using a vial you need to fill up with your lower gauge needle. Wipe the rubber seal with an alcohol swap before you start. Its best to puncture the rubber seal from an angle so that it can seal back up once the needle is removed. Tip the vial upside down and withdraw the required amount. Make sure there are no bubbles in the oil (miniscule bubbles are normal). Once complete remove the needle and put on the higher gauge needle attachment.
Wipe the injection site with another alcohol wipe. Then inject the needle at a 90 degree angle all the way in. Your glute is very big so do not stress about going in too deep. Withdraw the plunger slightly looking for blood. If you see blood then you have hit a vein and should try a different spot. Otherwise slowly (I know you will want to go fast) plunge the oil into your body which can take a few minutes.
Withdraw the needle and check for bleeding, throw on a bandaid if there is any. Otherwise rub the affected area for 5 minutes to help dispurse the oil.
The most common side effects from testosterone come from its aromatising properties where testosterone is converted into oestrogen. These sides can be minimised with an increase use of arimidex up to 0.5mg every day and for most people barely be noticed with the cycle I have provided above. The use of Dbol increases the risk of side effects and also can harm your liver, but the short cycle suggested above won’t make too much difference. Also I will mention you are going to feel some discomfort for 3-4 days after your initial injections which will gradually reduce as you become accustom to the injections. This is completely normal and may require a bit of
- Water Retention
- Gyno (sore, red or inflamed nipples)
- High Blood pressure
- High Cholestorol
- Testicular Atrophy (your balls shrink because they are not working)
For the testicular atrophy you can use HCG as mentioned earlier if you are concerned but they almost always rebound particularly for first time users. Otherwise you just need to be aware of the potential side effects and look out for them whilst on cycle. There are other traditional methods of dealing with these sides as well which I have covered in greater detail here.
Now you beginners have a step by step guide to using steroids for the first time. Get your diet and training right, keep it simple and let testosterone do the rest, you will be surprised by how effective a simple cycle like this will be. If you have any questions or would like to post your own progress for others to follow, please leave a comment below or join the forum and share your experience. Good luck and stay safe.
